In an attempt to stop the menace of fake degree certificates and mark sheets, the Mumbai University has lodged a first information report (FIR) against 627 candidates who produced bogus certificates from 2006 to 2009. They were detected during verification.
“There was a directive from the state government to all universities to lodge a police complaint against all those candidates who had produced bogus degree certificates or mark sheets,” said Vilas Shinde, controller of examinations, Mumbai University.
“Acting on that directive, we lodged an FIR at the Bandra-Kurla Complex police station on Thursday against bearers of 627 such fake documents.”
Shinde said that while the maximum number of cases can be found in Bachelor of Commerce (BCom), the other disciplines include Bachelor of Arts (BA), engineering, Bachelor of Science (BSc) and also Masters of Management Studies (MMS).
“This is a strong step that has been taken by the university and will surely discourage others from misusing such important documents of academic credentials,” said Shinde.
In April, higher and technical education minister, Rajesh Tope, had mooted the idea to provide smart cards to university graduates to prevent fake degree certificates.
Subsequently, in May, Shinde submitted a proposal to give smart cards to students which would have their passing certificates, mark sheets, and degree certificates encrypted on a chip.
“The FIR is another step to keep a check on bogus documents. The police will now conduct an inquiry and take suitable action,” Shinde said.
