KSOU not to offer technical courses from this year

Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), Mysuru, which has begun admissions, will not offer any new technical courses from this year owing to increasing complaints from prospective candidates about dubious study centres. Over 3 lakh candidates apply to the university each year for courses offered by it and through collaborative institutes.
KSOU Vice-Chancellor M.G. Krishnan told The Hindu that only existing programmes, most of which are being offered through collaborations, would continue. But, no new technical courses would be offered.
“I have come across quite a few complaints about study centres not affiliated to us luring candidates into taking their courses using the university’s name. So, we have decided to do away with all the technical programmes henceforth. Only those that have already begun will continue functioning as students have been admitted to them,” he said. The study centres are expected to provide face-to-face interaction between the students and the KSOU, weekend counselling, and library facility, and all important communications are sent through the centres. The KSOU has 21 regional centres under which the study centres function.
Apart from this, students being approached by middlemen have also been cheated into paying over and above the fee prescribed by the university for various courses.
About three months ago, the university discontinued a pre-university course-like ‘bridge course’. The Vice-Chancellor said this was because both the State government and other universities did not recognise the course.
